Train with the body you have today

Published

Most training plans do not fail on the hard days they predicted. They fail on the ordinary ones they did not.

A plan is a forecast, not a contract

Any plan is written before the week happens. It assumes a night of sleep you have not had yet, meals you have not eaten, and a week at work that has not gone wrong yet. When the day disagrees with the page, the page is the thing that was guessing.

The usual responses are both bad. Pushing through a session your body cannot absorb buys fatigue at full price and adaptation at a discount. Skipping it entirely breaks the habit, and the habit is doing more work than any single session ever does.

Relax the load before the exercise

There is an order to what you give up, and most people start at the wrong end. Change the smallest thing that makes the session possible, in roughly this sequence:

  • Drop the heaviest set and keep the rest of the work.
  • Cut one set from each exercise rather than trimming every exercise.
  • Shorten the session from the end, where the least important work lives.
  • Swap the movement only if it hurts — and swap it for the same pattern, not a different one.

What to leave alone

Keep the shape of the session. The hard compound movement stays first, while you are freshest, even on a light day. Move it to the end and you get the worst version of it and a worse version of everything after.

Keep the log honest. A reduced session recorded as reduced is useful. A reduced session recorded as planned quietly corrupts every decision that comes after it, because next week's progression is calculated from numbers that did not happen.

A logged bad day is still data

A session logged at seventy per cent tells a coach something specific: the work was tolerated, the load was not. A skipped session tells it nothing at all, and nothing is the one input that cannot be used.

This is the practical argument for adjusting rather than abandoning. Over a few months, the record of what you actually did is more valuable than the record of what you intended, and only one of them can be used to decide what comes next.
